Intel: Don't Deploy Our Faulty Spectre Patches

Merely days after revealing that the reboot problem affecting Spectre/Meltdown-patched systems is more than widespread than initially thought, Intel on Monday brash users to stop deploying its buggy fixes.

"We recommend that OEMs, deject service providers, organization manufacturers, software vendors, and end users stop deployment of current versions, as they may introduce higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior," Intel's Data Middle Group EVP and General Managing director, Navin Shenoy, wrote in a web log post.

On a positive notation, Intel has identified the root cause of this problem for Broadwell and Haswell platforms and "fabricated good progress in developing a solution to accost it," Shenoy wrote. Over the weekend, the visitor began distributing a new version of the fix to manufacture partners for testing. Once that testing wraps upwards, the update will be made available for anybody.

"I apologize for any disruption this change in guidance may crusade," Shenoy wrote. "The security of our products is disquisitional for Intel, our customers and partners, and for me, personally. I assure y'all nosotros are working around the clock to ensure we are addressing these issues."

Intel initially believed the reboot problem was limited to firmware updated systems running its older Broadwell and Haswell CPUs. Last week, however, we found out that the upshot is affecting patched Ivy Bridge-, Sandy Bridge-, Skylake-, and Kaby Lake-based platforms likewise.

The Meltdown and Spectre flaws relate to how a CPU handles tasks that it thinks a PC will need to perform in the future, known as speculative execution.
